Smart Access Memory: the simple switch that makes an all-AMD gaming PC sing

With the introduction of AMD’s RX 6000-series GPUs, it’s possible to build a high-end PC that’s entirely reliant on red team technology. Multi-core processor running at 4.7GHz? Got it. Enthusiast-grade 4K graphics card? Fitted. PCIe 4.0 motherboard to plug it all into? Raring to go. Snap it all together and there’s even potential for a little bonus performance that AMD just found down the back of the PCIe interconnect, covered in dust. Something it likes to call Smart Access Memory.

It’s been a while since we would, nay, could wholly recommend an all-red rig for anything beyond the mid-range of gaming PCs. And by that I mean a fairly high-end PC, RX 5700 XT and all, but the spectrum is so skewed that we’re meant to think a $1,500 gaming PC is somehow ‘mid-range’. Regardless, AMD has been an easy enough recommendation to make for the budget and mid-range gamer,

The crabs of PC gaming, ranked

PC Gamer Ranked are our ridiculously comprehensive lists of the best, worst, and everything in-between from every corner of PC gaming.

Crabs! In games, crabs come in many forms, from a tasty ingredient in your stew to a challenging foe on the battlefield to a nigh-unbeatable endgame boss. These many-legged monstrosities, like armored spiders from the sea, can be found across all genres—a looming mechanical unit in a strategy game, a dungeon terror in a hack-and-slash, or something that simply crawls into your underpants in an pixelated adventure.

Why has it taken so long for us to rank the crabs of PC gaming? Well, due to quirks in maritime law and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, it was previously illegal to put a bunch of videogame crabs on a numbered list and judge them.

But thanks to the tireless work of our lawyers, millions of dollars spent on political lobbying,

PS5 controller just got a killer upgrade for PC gaming

The PS5 is pretty much impossible to find right now, but the DualSense controller is fairly easy to find. And, thanks to a recent Steam update, you don’t even need a PS5 to get the most out of Sony’s innovative peripheral.

If you have a gaming PC and a few Sony-adjacent games, those will do just fine as well. The DualSense now has complete Steam compatibility, and while not every game will be fully compatible, any game that takes advantage of a common Steam developer tool will be.

The information comes from an official Steam blog entitled, simply enough, “Steam Input API Adds PS5 Controller Support.” Likewise, Steam’s full DualSense integration sounds similarly straightforward:

“All games currently using the Steam Input API are now fully compatible with the new PS5 controller – with no developer updates required, it just works,” the post reads. “Full support for the LED, trackpad,

‘I Forget About the World:’ Afghan Youth Find Escape in a Video Game

KABUL, Afghanistan — Rifle fire, hurried footsteps and distant explosions. The rat-a-tat of a firefight. Cars mangled from grenades. The young man was transfixed.

It could have been any day in Kabul, where targeted assassinations, terrorist attacks and wanton violence have become routine, and the city often feels as if it is under siege. But for Safiullah Sharifi, his behind firmly planted on a dusty stoop in the Qala-e Fatullah neighborhood, the death and destruction unfurled on his phone, held landscape-style in his hands.

“On Friday I play from early morning to around 4 p.m.,” said Mr. Sharifi, 20, with a sly grin, as if he knew he was detailing the outline of an addiction to a passer-by. His left hand is tattooed with a skull in a jester’s hat, a grim image offset by his lanky and not-quite-old-enough demeanor. “Almost every night, it’s 8 p.m. to 3 a.m.”
