Amazon’s Pharmacy Rollout Sinks Drugstore Stocks

Amazon.com  (AMZN) – Get Report officially opened the virtual doors of Amazon Pharmacy, a new full-service digital pharmacy that lets Amazon Prime members order and fill their prescriptions online and have them delivered directly to their front doors.

The offering puts Amazon in direct competition with pharmacy giants CVS Health  (CVS) – Get Report and Walgreens Boots Alliance  (WBA) – Get Report, and helps it compete with Walmart  (WMT) – Get Report, Target  (TGT) – Get Report and other big-box stores that already sell prescription drugs.

Walgreens Boots, CVS Health and Rite Aid  (RAD) – Get Report all traded lower in premarket trading on Tuesday after Amazon’s announcement. Shares of Walgreens Boots were down 8.7% at $40.26, while shares of CVS were down 7.95% at $67.63. Rite Aid stock was down 12.79% at $11.28.

Amazon’s Fire TV finally getting HBO Max, months after launch of new streaming service

(Amazon Photo)

Almost six months after the launch of the new HBO Max streaming service, the platform is now coming to Amazon’s Fire TV.

HBO Max will be available starting Tuesday on Fire TV streaming devices, Fire TV Edition smart TVs and Fire Tablets. Customers who have an HBO subscription through Prime Video will have access to HBO Max for no additional cost by logging into the streaming service with their Amazon credentials.

When WarnerMedia rolled out HBO Max in May with a more robust lineup of content than traditional cable HBO, Amazon’s service was noticeably absent from the range of cable providers and tech platforms signed on to host it. HBO Max was developed in part at engineering in offices in Seattle.

Customers can use Amazon Alexa to navigate to the HBO Max app by saying “Alexa, find HBO Max” with Fire TV’s included Alexa Voice Remote or a

Amazon’s new Alexa feature uses AI to infer what users really want

Amazon today announced a new Alexa feature for U.S.-based English-language users that enables devices powered by the assistant to infer latent goals, or goals implicit in requests but not directly expressed. For instance, if a user says “How long does it take to steep tea?,” Alexa might follow up with “Five minutes is a good place to start” and the question “Would you like me to set a timer for five minutes?”

According to Amazon, dialog transitions like these require a number of AI algorithms under the hood. A machine learning-based trigger model decides whether to anticipate a latent goal by factoring in aspects of the context including text of a user’s session and whether the user has engaged with Alexa’s suggestions in the past. If the model finds the context suitable, the system suggests an Alexa app to address the latent goal.

Those suggestions are based on relationships learned

The European Union said Tuesday that Amazon is likely breaching antitrust rules by misusing the data of independent sellers, and also said the retailer may be favoring its own products and those of marketplace traders who use its logistics. The allegations come as President Donald Trump has targeted the company, and a change in American administrations may not ease the attacks.

The world’s biggest online retailer is becoming a global punching bag for regulators even as its sales soar during a pandemic that’s shut many brick-and-mortar stores. The EU’s announcement is just the latest in a slew of probes and regulatory initiatives from Brussels to Berlin to Washington examining the e-commerce giant’s business practices.

In the U.S., Amazon has faced increasing scrutiny in recent years from Trump, including Twitter attacks against

“We are excited to add India’s most loved game — cricket — to our content selection for our Prime Video customers, and we are thrilled to work with New Zealand Cricket on this endeavour … and the cricketing rivalry between the two

Amazon’s Stock May Drop Further Despite Big Earnings Beat

Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN)  reported blow-out third quarter results on October 29, easily beating analysts’ expectations. But it may be a disappointment on Amazon’s Web Services business that turned the stock lower by almost 2% in the after-hours session.

The equity has had a tremendous move in 2020. However, the stock isn’t cheap, with the shares trading at its highest valuation in years. The technical chart wasn’t in great shape heading into results either.

The lockdown forced by the coronavirus continues to be a driving force for Amazon, which saw its profit triple from a year ago. Those profits are expected to continue even as the company spends billions of dollars dealing with COVID-19.

Net income for the third quarter rose to $6.3 billion, or $12.37 a share, from $2.1 billion, or $4.23 a share, a year ago. The online retailing giant also posted revenue that rose 37% to $96.1 billion. Excluding foreign exchange rate changes, the increase was still 36% over a year ago.

Wall Street expected Amazon would maintain its strong momentum in the third quarter, with the e-commerce juggernaut making billions more dollars during the pandemic as customers used its site
