Data warehouse firm Snowflake reports bigger loss in first post-IPO quarterly report

(Reuters) — Warren Buffett-backed data warehouse firm Snowflake reported a third-quarter loss on Wednesday in its first quarterly results, following a blockbuster market debut in September and sending its shares more than 5% lower after the bell.

The San Mateo, California-based company, which has 3,554 customers, raised $3.36 billion in its initial public offering after it was priced above the target range in the biggest U.S. listing so far this year.

Snowflake said product revenue, or sales from services on its platform, more than doubled to $148.5 million, accounting for 93% of total revenue in the quarter.

Founded in 2012 in San Francisco, Snowflake sells a cloud data platform that offers to consolidate a business’ data onto one platform. Cloud-based business services have seen rapid growth this year as offices around the world adapted to working remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Net loss for the quarter ended October

PSU Institute for Computational and Data Sciences’ Symposium Builds Collaborations Across Disciplines

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., Dec. 3, 2020 — The Penn State Institute for Computational and Data Sciences’ 2020 virtual symposium brought together researchers, computational experts, government officials and industry specialists who are working to build interdisciplinary communities that can transform this deluge of data into a stream of solutions for the world’s most pressing scientific and societal challenges.

“We are here today because of data — More specifically, a deluge of data,” Jenni Evans, professor of meteorology and atmospheric science and director of the Institute for Computational and Data Sciences. “This deluge is especially evident in interdisciplinary research, where we are using a diversity of data to integrate multiple perspectives to address complex problems, often involving a diversity of data and the challenges that brings.”

She added that finding ways to use this data deluge to our advantage would also require support from industries outside of academia.

“ICDS has been partnering

Astronomers to release most accurate data ever for nearly two billion stars — ScienceDaily

On 3 December an international team of astronomers will announce the most detailed ever catalogue of the stars in a huge swathe of our Milky Way galaxy. The measurements of stellar positions, movement, brightness and colours are in the third early data release from the European Space Agency’s Gaia space observatory and will be publicly available. Initial findings include the first optical measurement of the acceleration of the Solar system. The data set, and early scientific discoveries, will be presented at a special briefing hosted by the Royal Astronomical Society.

Launched in 2013, Gaia operates in an orbit around the so-called Lagrange 2 (L2) point, located 1.5 million kilometres behind the Earth in the direction away from the Sun. At L2 the gravitational forces between the Earth and Sun are balanced, so the spacecraft stays in a stable position, allowing long-term essentially unobstructed views of the sky.

Many Americans Ignored Thanksgiving Travel Warnings From CDC, Data Show : Coronavirus Updates : NPR

More Americans stayed home for Thanksgiving this year compared with last year — but by relatively small margins.

An NPR analysis of mobile phone location data showed that 42% of Americans with smartphones remained home, up from 36% last year.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention repeatedly urged people to avoid holiday travel because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the warnings, 13% of Americans still traveled a significant distance, the data showed, although that number was down from 17% last year.

Ali Mokdad, from the University of Washington, said that ideally, more people would have stayed home given the high case rates. “This level of travel will unfortunately lead to a rise in cases,” said Mokdad, who is the chief strategy officer for Population Health.

Data, provided to NPR by SafeGraph, are based on tracking the locations of about 18 million mobile phones across the United States. NPR analyzed

The Milky Way and beyond: Scientists publish new data on nearly 2 billion stars

As of today (Dec. 3), scientists have 1.8 billion local stars at their fingertips.

That bounty is thanks to the European Space Agency’s Gaia mission, which has spent 6.5 years tracking stars in our Milky Way galaxy and beyond. Using the spacecraft’s observations, scientists can create a precise 3D map of stars and find patterns playing out across the galaxy.

“Essentially all of astronomy benefits from this one way or another because it’s very fundamental data,” Anthony Brown, an astronomer at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands and chair of the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium Executive team, told Space.com. “It’s a very, very broad survey mission.”

How Tech Companies Can Use Providerless Technology To Help Fix Their Data Privacy Problem

Itay Levy is the CEO and Co-Founder of Identiq, the world’s first anonymous identity validation network.

I don’t think it’s a secret that the tech world has a data privacy problem. A series of scandals, from Cambridge Analytica to the Equifax data breach and many more, have made consumers aware that the convenience and connectivity we value so highly in our online lives are sometimes achieved at the cost of data privacy — and sometimes with frightening consequences.

Confessions Of A Data Baron

I have a personal history with this problem. My first two startups were Buzzmetrics and Appoxee, which were acquired by Nielsen and Teradata, respectively. Both focused on collecting, analyzing and using consumer data.

In both companies, huge amounts of data passed through our hands — a trust we were enormously careful to protect and use appropriately. But when I began my third startup, I started
