Two teenagers died after being shot in a Sacramento mall during Black Friday shopping, officials said.

A 19-year-old man was found dead at the Arden Fair Mall in Sacramento, and a 17-year-old was taken to the hospital where he later died, according to a statement from city police. 

The victims have not been identified publicly.

In a statement to Newsweek, the animal welfare charity Humane Society International said: “The mink who have been gassed to death in Denmark were buried in mass shallow graves, where their decaying bodies have started to produce gases as part of the decomposing process, which makes their bodies expand and push back up through the soil.

On-premises data warehouses are dead

Global Market Insights estimates that cloud providers will host the majority of data warehousing loads by 2025. But don’t take their word for it. Gartner estimates that 30 percent of data warehousing workloads now run in the cloud and that this will grow to two-thirds by 2024. Just a few years ago in 2016 the figure was less than 7 percent, also according to Gartner.   

None of this should be a surprise. Even the core data warehouse technology providers have seen this trend and are spending the majority of their R&D budgets to build solutions for public cloud providers. Moreover, the public cloud providers themselves have “company killing” products, such as AWS’s RedShift, a columnar database designed to compete with the larger enterprise data warehouse players. 

Past impediments to building data warehouses and data marts on public clouds included a perception that security was still an issue on public clouds.

Bursts of radio waves in space may be from cores of dead stars

Astronomers have spotted a handful of extremely intense and brief blasts of radio waves since 2007 but have yet to pin down exactly what’s creating them. The blasts have fueled all sorts of speculation about their origins, from exploding or colliding stars to alien civilizations.

Now the speculation soon may be resolved, with three teams of scientists finally finding a clear and plausible source for the puzzling pulses, known as “fast radio bursts,” or FRBs. At least 13 dead in Central America from Eta as forecasters watch Florida impact

The remnants of what was once Hurricane Eta drenched Central America on Thursday as forecasters tried to determine what the system could bring to Florida early next week.

The disorganized center of Eta, which was a tropical depression on Thursday morning, was over Honduras and moving northwest at 9 mph. The slow movement resulted in heavy rains in Central America. At least 13 deaths were attributed to the storm.

The system is expected to move back over the Caribbean Sea and potentially strengthen into a tropical storm, then move toward Cuba and Florida, according to Spectrum Bay News 9 meteorologist Diane Kacmarik.

“Forecast confidence is low and there are several reasons why,” she said.

Forecasters will watch to see how well Eta re-organizes over the Caribbean. Kacmarik said models are not in agreement about that, but that forecasters should have a better idea of a future track by Friday or

Red Dead Redemption 2 Sales Surge As GTA Online Sets More Records

Take-Two, the company that owns Rockstar Games and 2K Games, released its latest earnings report this week, and in particular, Red Dead Redemption II and Grand Theft Auto V are doing very well.

Red Dead Redemption 2 net bookings–that is, how much money Take-Two made from the game–jumped by 124 percent during the July-September quarter. This include 106 percent growth in full-game sales, Take-Two said. It would appear that, like many other games, Red Dead Redemption II enjoyed a surge in sales as people continued to stay home during COVID-19 lockdowns.

In conjunction with the spike in sales, Take-Two reported that new player growth rose by 47 percent during the period. Additionally, microtransaction sales–which are called “recurrent consumer spending” at Take-Two–rose year-over-year for Red Dead Online by 96 percent, exceeding expectations.

Rare ancient child burial reveals 8,000-year-old secrets of the dead — ScienceDaily

Archaeologists from The Australian National University (ANU) have discovered a rare child burial dating back 8,000 years on Alor Island, Indonesia.

The one-of-its-kind burial for the region is from the early mid-Holocene and gives important insights into burial practices of the time.

Lead researcher Dr Sofia Samper Carro said the child, aged between four and eight, was laid to rest with some kind of ceremony.

“Ochre pigment was applied to the cheeks and forehead and an ochre-coloured cobble stone was placed under the child’s head when they were buried,” she said.

“Child burials are very rare and this complete burial is the only one from this time period,” Dr Samper Carro said.

“From 3,000 years ago to modern times, we start seeing more child burials and these are very well studied. But, with nothing from the early Holocene period, we just don’t know how people of this era treated their

Weakened Eta drenches Central America; at least 57 dead

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) — The rain-heavy remains of Hurricane Eta flooded homes from Panama to Guatemala on Thursday as the death toll across Central America rose to at least 57. Forecasters said the once-mighty storm, now a tropical depression, was expected to regather and head toward Cuba and possibly the Gulf of Mexico by early next week.

The storm that hit Nicaragua as a Category 4 hurricane on Tuesday had become more of a vast tropical rainstorm, but it was advancing so slowly and dumping so much rain that much of Central America remained on high alert.

Governments and aid organizations warned that the flooding and landslides the heavy rain generated had created a slow-moving humanitarian disaster across much of the region.
