Qualcomm taps Samsung to make new flagship 5G smartphone chips

Dec 1 (Reuters) – Qualcomm Inc on Tuesday announced a new flagship smartphone chip that will feature enhanced gaming and photo abilities and will be manufactured by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd’s chipmaking division.

Called the Snapdragon 888, the 5G chip represents the top of Qualcomm’s lineup for mobile phone processors. Smartphones containing the chip are due to be launched in the first quarter of next year.

High-end Android phones from Xiaomi Corp and LG Electronics Inc are expected to sport the chip.

It is the first time Samsung, which competes fiercely with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), has made Qualcomm’s flagship chip on its new 5-nanometer process for smartphones. The South Korean firm won a contract for 5G chips from Qualcomm earlier this year.

Apple Inc’s iPhones also use a chip made with 5-nanometer technology but analysts believe the iPhone chips are made by TSMC.

Fujifilm announced the launch of its updated GFX100 large format mirrorless digital camera on Wednesday, which now comes equipped with infrared image-making capabilities that could be used in forensic, scientific, and cultural preservation capacities.

Through its new Pixel Shift Multi-Shot function, the GFX100 IR can now be used to “reveal intricate details within a subject or scene that can only normally be seen through the infrared spectrum.”

The IR comes equipped with filters in front of the camera lens that allow its users to make pictures at a variety of different light wavelengths (with the option of still using the camera normally to take pictures of colors along the visible spectrum).

The added features will be “invaluable for cultural research,” Fujifilm said in a statement, because “reviewing images of a subject in infrared could ultimately lead to potentially unlocking untold secrets from

A Super Camera Flagship With Some Major App Quirks

In a different time line, Huawei’s latest flagship, the Mate 40 Pro, could have been a real contender for a phone-of-the-year award—a 5G powerhouse with an industry-leading camera, long-lasting battery and just an overall premium feel.

The Huawei Mate 40 Pro has some fantastic hardware, with some major software quirks.

But this is 2020, and 2020 is weird. So despite fond memories of prior handsets in the Mate range, and Huawei’s usual top craftsmanship in the build of the device, it’s a little disappointing that for many—myself included—the phone will be a non-starter.

It needs to be noted up front that there is a lot to like about the handset, which is priced firmly in the high-end $1,000-plus price bracket and hits the market as one of the last big phone releases in a year defined by a series of increasingly terrible events.

Samsung may launch flagship phone early to grab Huawei share: sources

By Hyunjoo Jin and Heekyong Yang

SEOUL (Reuters) – Samsung Electronics Co Ltd <005930.KS> may launch its flagship Galaxy S smartphones more than a month earlier than expected in a bid to grab market share from Huawei and fend off competition from Apple Inc, three sources familiar with the matter said.

Huawei Technologies Co Ltd once challenged Samsung’s top position in the global smartphone market, but the Chinese rival is in survival mode with U.S. restrictions choking off its supplies of chips used in smartphones and telecom equipment.

South Korean chip industry officials hope Joe Biden’s presidency will ease some of those restrictions, although they are far from certain as they also expect the incoming U.S. administration to maintain a tough stance on China.

Samsung is preparing to launch its new Galaxy S21 as early as late January next year, whereas it previously launched its flagship S20 phone in early
