“The stress is increasing now that we’re entering the ‘hot’ phase,” Karin Krestan, Lufthansa Cargo’s director of operations, told AFP during a tour of the temperature-controlled “Cargo Cool Center” terminal.

Krestan, who uses her skills as a former nurse, is sure her team is ready for the task.

BC Tech closes Innovation Hub as federal funding expires

Earlier this week, the BC Tech Association announced the 26,000 square-foot BC Tech Innovation Hub is set to close at the end of November.

The hub was the association’s main physical outpost and housed regional startups. It was funded with a portion of the $10.4 million the federal government provided to BC Tech through the Canada Accelerator and Incubator Program (CAIP) in 2014. BC Tech’s CAIP money was spread across five years and ended in March 2019, following the government winding down the program.

“It feels like the innovation hub was really the heart of the community, and its loss is going to be challenging.”
– Jill Tipping, BC Tech

With the loss of its only physical space, the BC Tech Association has become a fully remote operation. The CEO of the BC Tech Association, Jill Tipping, told BetaKit the hub couldn’t be sustained without the federal government investment that

Seattle is not exactly known as a hotspot for national security software startups. But Matt Shobe hopes to carry forward the region’s history of defense-related work with Rebellion Defense, a year-old Washington D.C.-based startup that recently opened a new office in Seattle.

Shobe, a veteran Seattle-area entrepreneur, joined Rebellion Defense last year and is heading up the company’s Seattle engineering hub.

Rebellion Defense is led by co-founder and CEO Chris Lynch, another longtime Seattle tech leader who moved to D.C. in 2015 to launch the Pentagon’s Defense Digital Service (DDS).

As director of the DDS, Lynch worked under three defense secretaries and helped lead the $10 billion JEDI cloud contract procurement process, along with the Hack the Pentagon bug bounty program. He departed in 2019 to launch Rebellion Defense.

The startup has attracted investors including former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, who was chairman of the
