The Technology 202: ACLU sues DHS over purchase of cellphone location data used to track immigrants

It’s critical we uncover how federal agencies are accessing bulk databases of Americans’ location data and why,” Nathan Freed Wessler, senior staff attorney with the ACLU’s Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project, said in a statement. “There can be no accountability without transparency.

Senate Democrats, such as privacy advocate Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), had written a letter to DHS asking for more information on how such data was being used. On Wednesday morning, they disclosed that the department’s inspector general would take up the matter.

“If federal agencies are tracking American citizens without warrants, the public deserves answers and accountability,” Wyden said in a statement. “I won’t accept anything less than a thorough and swift inspector general investigation that sheds light on CBP’s phone location data surveillance program.”

The lawsuit highlights how the explosion of private-sector data and location-tracking services can be leveraged by the government.

Mysterious Utah monolith’s location no longer a secret

The location of the mysterious monolith discovered last week among the red rocks of eastern Utah was destined not to remain a secret for long.

Monday’s revelation set off a frenzy of internet sleuthing, and by Wednesday intrepid hikers were posting selfies with the gleaming 10-foot-tall sculpture.

Utah wildlife officials spotted the object during an aerial count of bighorn sheep on Nov. 18 — and it was the record of their helicopter’s flight path that revealed the coordinates posted by Reddit user Tim Slane.

Slane told BBC reporters that he found a point in the flight record that indicated the helicopter might have landed, and then he examined satellite images of that area, about 20 miles southwest of Moab. One image revealed a shadow apparently cast by a tall, slender object.

Drug guides stem cells to desired location, improving their ability to heal — ScienceDaily

Scientists at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute have created a drug that can lure stem cells to damaged tissue and improve treatment efficacy — a scientific first and major advance for the field of regenerative medicine. The discovery, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), could improve current stem cell therapies designed to treat such neurological disorders as spinal cord injury, stroke, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis?(ALS) and other neurodegenerative disorders; and expand their use to new conditions, such as heart disease or arthritis.

Toxic cells (green) disappeared when mice with a neurodegenerative condition received both therapeutic stem cells (red) and the drug SDV1a-which corresponded with longer lives and delayed symptom onset. These results suggest that SDV1a can be used to improve the efficacy of stem cell treatments.

“The ability to instruct a stem cell where to go in the body or to a particular

Gartner’s Location Independence Technology Predictions: Part 2 of 3

November 3, 2020
By: Kim Morgan

Each year, research firm Gartner unveils the top strategic technology trends at its annual IT Symposium/Xpo America’s conference. This year was no different, except the conference was held virtually instead of in-person.

Indeed, a virtual symposium is probably the most “2020” thing right now. Gartner underscored how companies need to focus on building resilience and adapting to unavoidable disruptions. “The need for operational resiliency across enterprise functions has never been greater,” said Brian Burke, research vice president at Gartner.

“As organizations journey from responding to the COVID-19 crisis to driving growth, they must focus on the three main areas that form the themes of this year’s trends: people centricity, location independence and resilient delivery,” Burke said.

Last week we covered the first category: People-Centric Technology which focused on technologies that underscored how people interact with technologies, and how technologies can enhance every-day experiences.
