When it comes to testing the camera features in new iPhone models, photographer Austin Mann’s detailed reviews are second to none. iPhone 12 Pro Max reviews went live this morning, and Mann’s in-depth camera test is also now available.


Mann’s review a must-read review for anyone who is interested in the ‌iPhone 12 Pro‌ Max for its camera, because this is the first year in some time that Apple has introduced different cameras in the Pro and Pro Max models. The Pro Max has a larger sensor and larger pixels, plus a different telephoto lens.

Despite the improvements in the ‌iPhone 12 Pro‌ Max over the Pro, Mann said that in his testing, he could “barely see a difference” between the two iPhones in most lighting conditions. The exception was semi-low-light scenes, such as just after sunset or in a night urban scene.

Photographer Austin Mann reviews the iPhone 12 Pro Max camera

Travel photographer Austin Mann has taken the iPhone 12 Pro Max to Utah’s Zion National Park, providing a look at what 2020’s highest-end iPhone camera is capable of.

In October, Austin Mann reviewed the iPhone 12 Pro at Glacier National Park in Montana, praising the improvement to the lineup over the iPhone 11 lineup. Now, he’s taken the iPhone 12 Pro Max to Utah to see how it stands up against its smaller counterpart.

Mann goes on record stating that he prefers the size of the iPhone 12 Pro to its larger, more expensive sibling. Yet, he was curious to see what sort of improvements the iPhone 12 Pro Max boasted over the rest of the lineup.

Photographer Austin Mann Tests the iPhone 12 Pro’s Camera

Travel photographer Austin Mann usually performs an in-depth review of new iPhone models to test their camera performance in real-world scenarios. To test Apple’s new iPhone 12 Pro, Mann traveled to Glacier National Park, Montana.

Mann focused on some of the biggest camera upgrades with the ‌iPhone 12 Pro‌, including the upgraded Wide lens, Ultra Wide Night mode, and LiDAR autofocus, across a range of conditions and environments.

The upgraded 26mm Wide angle lens with a f/1.6 aperture performed better in low light, according to Mann. In a 30-second exposure shot with almost no visible light (above), he found that Night mode and the Wide lens worked extremely well together.

When investigating the new seven-element Wide lens for better edge-to-edge sharpness, Mann shot images with lots of detail in the corners of the frame, but did not see better results than on the iPhone 11 Pro.
