Three Product Concepts from OPPO

At INNO DAY 2020, the smartphone brand introduced three new concept products that would “define future technological exploration”

A short while ago, consumer electronics and mobile communications OPPO held its OPPO INNO DAY 2020 event with “Leap into the Future” as the theme. A major talking point at the event was the company’s 3+N+X technology development strategy, with the “3” referring to the three underlying technologies, namely hardware, software and services technologies; the “N” representing a number of OPPO’s essential capabilities, including AI, security and privacy, multimedia, and interconnectivity; and the “X” referring to the leading-edge and differentiated technologies and strategic resources.

That being said, arguably the most memorable part of INNO DAY 2020 was when OPPO introduced three new concept products, each showcasing a different technological innovation that we will no doubt see in future OPPO products.

First up is the OPPO X 2021 rollable concept handset. As that

Chinese Smartphone Vendor Oppo Surprised the Market in their Keynote Event by Introducing a Scrollable Smartphone for 2021

Mobile industry players are currently attempting to find new form factors for smartphones and tablets in the hopes of getting the leap over some of leading brands like Apple and Samsung. Knowing this, Samsung is being aggressive with their Galaxy Z Fold2. Though currently it’s still too bulky when you consider that Microsoft’s dual display smartphone branded the Surface Duo, is vastly lighter, thinner and cooler.

Yet there’s another form factor on the horizon that may be more practical, at least in theory. It’s the scrollable smartphone and one smartphone company is reportedly bring this to market in 2021.

At present, Apple has a number of scrollable/rollable smartphone patents on record (01, 02, 03 and 04) as does Samsung (01, 02, 03 and 04). Most have been portrayed awkwardly in patents resembling ancient scrolls.

Connecting the design to a modern smartphone has been a little difficult. Samsung’s patent figures shown

Oppo X 2021 rollable phone

  • There are no short-term plans to release the Oppo X 2021 rollable phone.
  • Oppo adds that commercialization requires research and business justification.
  • The brand also noted that the X 2021 screen is made out of plastic.

Oppo made tech headlines last week when it revealed the X 2021 rollable phone concept at its Inno Day 2020 event. The design offers a 6.7-inch smartphone screen that extends from the side to deliver a 7.4-inch display.

It makes for an intriguing alternative to foldable phones, but Oppo has now told Android Authority there aren’t any plans to offer a commercial release in the near future.

“Although there is no plan for its commercialization in the short term, it will serve as a guide for the transformation and evolution of future product form factors,” the company told us in response to an emailed query.

Oppo shows off concept rolling phone and AR glasses

Oppo has held its second annual “Inno Day,” an event where it shows off products in concept form and sets out its vision for the future. Headlining this year is a smartphone with an expandable “rolling” screen and a new set of AR glasses.

The Oppo X 2021 is a concept phone that the company says is the result of its research and development flexible displays. In regular smartphone use the OLED display has a 6.7-inch surface area, but that can be expanded to a squarer, tablet-like 7.4-inch panel depending on the content or use case.

The phone slid all the way open.

Oppo says it developed its own power train, structural plate, and screen laminate to ensure the device’s durability. You can see how it works from the front here:

And here’s what it looks like around the back:

Oppo isn’t the first company to hit on this idea
