Patient Engagement Tools and Supports & New Anti-Kickback Statute

Providers have a new tool in their toolbox to promote population health. The Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) has adopted a new, extremely broad safe harbor that allows certain providers to give patients tools and supports, with a value of up to $500 annually, in order to achieve specified identifiable health goals. The goal can be to promote adherence to a drug or treatment regimen or prevent/manage a disease or condition. It gives providers flexibility to provide tools and supports to address social determinants of health such as transportation, nutrition and safe housing. For Medicare fee-for-service providers, these tools used to be restricted to providers who participated in a Medicare demonstration program, such as an accountable care organization, or participated in a capitated arrangement with a Medicare Advantage plan and used these tools under care management or other plan-driven arrangements. The tools

Big data saves lives, and patient safeguards are needed — ScienceDaily

The use of big data to address the opioid epidemic in Massachusetts poses ethical concerns that could undermine its benefits without clear governance guidelines that protect and respect patients and society, a University of Massachusetts Amherst study concludes.

In research published in the open-access journal BMC Medical Ethics, Elizabeth Evans, associate professor in the School of Public Health and Health Sciences, sought to identify concerns and develop recommendations for the ethical handling of opioid use disorder (OUD) information stored in the Public Health Data Warehouse (PHD).

“Efforts informed by big data are saving lives, yielding significant benefits,” the paper states. “Uses of big data may also undermine public trust in government and cause other unintended harms.”

Maintained by the Massachusetts Department of Health, the PHD was established in 2015 as an unprecedented public health monitoring and research tool to link state government data sets and provide timely information to

Talix Granted Patent for Healthcare Technology That Enriches Patient Data

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 19, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Talix, a SaaS solution for both payers and healthcare providers to manage their patient information, announced a patent awarded by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office entitled, “Health Information System for Searching, Analyzing and Annotating Patient Data,” patent number 10,755,804. Talix’s proprietary technology uses unique natural language processing (NLP) and a semantic health taxonomy for payers and providers so they can more easily analyze comprehensive patient data–without significant manual work.

Patient data volume is increasing at a significant rate every year, and 80% of that information is unstructured text. With this transformation, healthcare organizations need both structured and unstructured information to get more accurate reimbursements and to make more informed decisions about patient care. The Talix platform, backed by Artificial Intelligence (AI), makes this change painless and intuitive by enabling customers to easily parse the high volume of patient information they

Study shows amount of time spent on each patient also increased between 32 to 62 percent — ScienceDaily

COVID-19 has, among other things, pushed patients of all ages into greater use of telemedicine to carry out regular doctor visits. A new study being presented at this year’s virtual American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) Annual Scientific Meeting reveals that “show rates” for children with asthma — how often parents brought their kids to an appointment rather than being a “no show” — increased with the use of telemedicine during four months of the pandemic.

“It would be normal to expect parents to be hesitant to bring kids into an asthma checkup during a pandemic,” says allergist Kenny Kwong, MD, study author. “We run the LAC+USC Breathmobile program (an urban school-based mobile asthma program) in Los Angeles and have regular asthma patients we work with. The pandemic in 2020 resulted in closure of most Los Angeles schools and face to face visits were converted to telemedicine visits.

Case study details leukemia patient who shed infectious SARS-CoV-2 for at least 70 days — ScienceDaily

The majority of people infected with SARS-CoV-2 appear to actively shed infectious virus for about 8 days, but there is a wide range of variability from person to person. Understanding how long people can remain actively infected is important, because it provides new details about a disease and a virus that are still not well understood and informs public health decisions. Researchers report November 4 in the journal Cell an unusual case of one woman with leukemia and a low antibody count who was infected with the coronavirus for at least 105 days, and infectious for at least 70, while remaining asymptomatic the entire time.

“At the time we started this study, we really didn’t know much about the duration of virus shedding,” says senior author Vincent Munster, a virologist at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “As this virus continues to spread, more people with a range
