Qualcomm and the smartphone as collaboration platform

Disclosure: Qualcomm is a client of the author.

This week saw Qualcomm’s coming out party for its new Snapdragon 888 platform, and it is impressive. There isn’t anything in it that hasn’t been improved significantly:  performance (both processing and network); photography; sound; image quality; battery life; gaming; AI; and awareness of its surroundings (the Qualcomm Sensing Hub).

But when I sit back and think about what these premium phones will be capable of next year, I can envision them coming close to the ideal collaboration platform — and be on track to change how we do Zoom meetings.

Let me explain.

The problem

Most of us do our videoconferencing with PCs, which means that we rush into our (home) office if we have a desktop PC and wind up with an excellent video shot of the top of our heads. Or if we have a laptop, we have to power

Google announced in a Wednesday email that it plans to shut down its 3D-object creation and library platform, Poly, next year, making it the latest of the company’s AR/VR projects to fall into obsolescence.

Initially conceptualized as a 3D creation tool and library optimized for virtual reality, Poly allowed users to create and view low polygon 3D assets, which could then be uploaded for use in scenes and apps.

According to the email, users will still be able to upload assets to the site until April 30, 2021, with any assets remaining available for download until June 30, when poly.google.com and associated APIs will no longer be accessible.

We appreciate you trusting us to host your assets and provide a space where they can shine,” the email reads in part. The amazing work that our users have

Google Will Close 3D Platform Poly in June

Google  (GOOGL) – Get Report said on Wednesday that it would shut down its Poly 3D platform in June and users will be unable to upload models starting in April, according to media reports.

The Mountain View, Calif., search, advertising and cloud-computing giant didn’t say why it was discontinuing the platform.

Google did say that the decision was part of a plan to shift resources and heavily invest in helpful augmented-reality experiences like Google Lens, AR walking navigation in its Maps app, and AR in Google Search.

Poly enabled users to upload, browse, and distribute 3D content created using tools such as Tilt Brush and Blocks, according to Forbes.

The Google Poly team said in a statement that users can download their entire library of 3D models and works before June 30 at takeout.google.com/settings/takeout/custom/poly.

After that date, poly.google.com and associated APIs will no longer be accessible.

Hyundai Motor Group Reveals New Dedicated EV Platform

Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) is hardly new to producing electrified vehicles. In fact it even has a platform that is specifically designed for that purpose that underpins the current Hyundai Ioniq and Kia Niro. But that platform is actually a compromise that was designed to be available with hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric (BEV) powertrains. With its new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), Hyundai is following in its footsteps of rivals such Volkswagen Group, GM and Ford in developing an architecture fully optimized for BEVs.

These modern BEV platforms reverse one of the most prevalent trends of the last 40 years with the

After two cable failures in the span of four months, Puerto Rico’s most venerable astronomy facility, the Arecibo radio telescope, has collapsed in an uncontrolled structural failure.

The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), which owns the site, decided in November to proceed with decommissioning the telescope in response to the damage, which engineers deemed too severe to stabilize without risking lives. The Arecibo Radio Telescope’s Massive Platform Has Collapsed

But the NSF needed time to come up with a plan for how to safely demolish the telescope in a controlled manner.

Instead, gravity did the job this morning (Dec. 1) at about 8 a.m. local time, according to reports from the area.

“NSF is saddened by this development,” the agency wrote in a tweet. “As we move forward, we will be looking for ways to assist the scientific community and maintain our strong relationship with the people of Puerto Rico.”

The NSF added that no injuries had

Arecibo radio telescope’s massive instrument platform has collapsed

The immense instrument platform and the large collection of cables that supported it, all of which are now gone.

On Monday night, the enormous instrument platform that hung over the Arecibo radio telescope’s big dish collapsed due to the failure of the remaining cables supporting it. The risk of this sort of failure was the key motivation behind the National Science Foundation’s recent decision to shut down the observatory, as the potential for collapse made any attempt to repair the battered scope too dangerous for the people who would do the repairs.

Right now, details are sparse. The NSF has confirmed the collapse and says it will provide more information once it’s confirmed. A Twitter account from a user from Puerto Rico shared an image that shows the support towers that used to hold the cables that suspended the instrument platform over the dish, now with nothing but empty space
