Gartner says 366 million units were sold during the third quarter of 2020, a drop of 5.7% year on year. However, this is far better than the previous two quarters, which coincided with the peak of the pandemic and during which the market contracted by more than a fifth.

There is renewed hope that the fourth quarter could see further improvement thanks to easing lockdown restrictions and delayed purchases. However, there is also a warning that ongoing uncertainty and economic pressures, coupled with the delayed rollout of 5G networks, could yet scupper improvement.

While encouraged by a resumption of domestic travel in Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines during the three-month period ended September 30, AirAsia said a spike in coronavirus cases in Malaysia and subsequent curbs had led it to reduce capacity in the country in October and November.

It halved its projected recovery rate in Malaysia to 31% of its pre-COVID-19 capacity by the year end, after already lowering it to 60% last month from 70-75% in August.

“There is a slight setback in Malaysia but we expect this to be short-lived and to bounce strongly

World’s Largest Free-Trade Pact Inspiration for Global Recovery

After four long years of diminished prospects, stagnation, and divisive geopolitics, four summits could show the way toward a better future.

Recently, Moscow hosted the 12th BRICS Summit. Malaysia is hosting the APEC Summit. And Riyadh will welcome the world leaders into the highly-anticipated G20 conference.

Importantly, these high-level events followed the signing of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), the world’s largest free-trade pact, which could help build multiple new paths toward a shared future.

The global economy is expected to shrink by 5 percent in 2020. World trade is likely to plummet by 20 percent. After misguided trade wars and the pandemic, global cooperation across all differences is vital to defeat the pandemic and facilitate economic recovery.

Drug eases recovery for those with severe alcohol withdrawal — ScienceDaily

A drug once used to treat high blood pressure can help alcoholics with withdrawal symptoms reduce or eliminate their drinking, Yale University researchers report Nov. 19 in the American Journal of Psychiatry.

In a double-blind study, researchers gave the drug prazosin or a placebo to 100 people entering outpatient treatment after being diagnosed with alcohol use disorder. All of the patients had experienced varying degrees of withdrawal symptoms prior to entering treatment.

According to the researchers, subjects with more severe symptoms — including shakes, heightened cravings and anxiety, and difficulty sleeping — who received prazosin significantly reduced the number of heavy drinking episodes and days they drank compared to those who received a placebo. The drug had little effect on those with few or no withdrawal symptoms.

“There has been no treatment readily available for people who experience severe withdrawal symptoms and these are the people at highest risk
