Results From This Blind Smartphone Camera Test Will Surprise You

Marques Brownlee, also known as MKBHD, hosted his third annual, 17-minute blind smartphone camera test featuring 20 new smartphones. The phones were grouped into a bracket that hid the phone names while the public voted for their favorites.

First of all, it’s important to note right from the start that this “test” is the furthest thing from scientific in nature.

“This isn’t a scientific test at all,” Brownlee says. “In fact, it’s kind of the opposite of a scientific test.”

The point of this playoff-style bracket isn’t to objectively claim one camera is better than another, but rather serves as a good case study for what people think makes a photo “good.” By the end, and after over 10 million total votes were cast, Brownlee was able to point out some interesting conclusions from the information he gathered.

The concept of the test is simple: Brownlee put together a seeded

Light-activated sensor delivers precision results at room temperature — ScienceDaily

Inspired by the surface of butterfly wings, researchers have developed a light-activated hydrogen sensor that produces ultra-precise results at room temperature.

The technology can detect hydrogen leaks well before they pose safety risks and can measure tiny amounts of the gas on people’s breath, for diagnosing gut disorders.

Commercial hydrogen sensors only work at temperatures of 150C or higher, but the prototype developed by researchers at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, is powered by light instead of heat.

The sensor, based on bumpy microstructures that imitate the surface of butterfly wings, is detailed in a new study published in the journal ACS Sensors.

Co-lead researcher Dr Ylias Sabri said the prototype was scalable, cost-effective and offered a total package of features that could not be matched by any hydrogen sensor currently on the market.

“Some sensors can measure tiny amounts, others can detect larger concentrations; they all need a

Experimental, simulation results reveal how coaxial, co-rotating rotors may lead to a quieter hover — ScienceDaily

Imagine a silent helicopter stealthily moving troops and supplies around a future battlefield. U.S. Army researchers look to helicopter noise reduction technology as a top priority in aircraft design.

At the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command, now known as DEVCOM, Army Research Laboratory, researchers collaborated with Uber and the University of Texas at Austin to investigate the acoustic properties of electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, which use distributed electric propulsion to power flight.

These eVTOL vehicles may aid the Army with important tasks such as aerial surveillance and cargo transport; however, they feature smaller rotors than traditional helicopters. As a result, eVTOL rotors may emit a different sound signature that researchers will have to take into consideration.

“The noise you hear from these smaller rotors is generated through fundamentally different physical mechanisms,” said Dr. George Jacobellis, Army research engineer at the laboratory’s Vehicle Technology Directorate. “Traditional modeling techniques

Lab results don’t explain ‘obesity paradox,’ but bias may — ScienceDaily

Results of standard laboratory tests performed on adult outpatients to provide an overall picture of their health are fairly consistent between those with obesity and their leaner counterparts, investigators report.

The finding negates one rationale behind what’s called the “obesity paradox,” which is that people with obesity are known to be at increased risk for a host of health problems like diabetes and hypertension, but tend to do better with these conditions than their leaner peers, including when they get admitted to critical care for reasons like heart attack or stroke.

One thought was that patients with obesity end up in intensive care sooner because their laboratory results were already out of line with their thinner peers, and these acute health events push them higher, they report in The Journal of Applied Laboratory Medicine.

“People who have obesity also have more hypertension, they get more diabetes, they get more

Oklahoma State vs. Texas Tech updates: Live NCAAF game scores, results for Saturday

Game Recap

The Oklahoma State Cowboys experienced an absolute beatdown Saturday but somehow put the pieces back together and came to play against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Oklahoma State snuck past Texas Tech with a 50-44 win. The Red Raiders can consider this payback for the 45-35 loss they dealt the Cowboys the last time the teams encountered one another last October.

Oklahoma State’s offense rushed out of the gates and came up with 21 first-half points. Texas Tech wasn’t quite able to keep up, and the score was 21-17 heading into the break. The offense for Oklahoma State continued to do well in the second half, scoring another 29 points to put the game away.

RB Dezmon Jackson had only a few touches last week, but he got the ball a lot more this time and made it count. Jackson had a dynamite game for the Cowboys; he
