Amid Pandemic, Orders Soar for Brazil Robot That Feeds Pigs Playing Classical Music | Technology News

SAO PAULO (Reuters) – Orders for a Brazilian pig-feeding robot, which plays classical music while dispensing meals, soared this year as farmers strove to cut costs amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Roboagro, the privately-owned company that sells the robot, said in a statement sent to Reuters on Thursday that orders rose by an average of 400% to 60 units per month.

The machine uses linear feeders allowing the animals, which are divided in pens, to receive the exact amount of feed needed for each meal. As it works, it plays classical music, which the company claims mitigates animal stress.

Roboagro Director Giovani Molin said in the statement the robot reduces the presence of humans on the pig farms, and generates data that helps improve overall herd management.

SpaceX is planning to fly a Starship rocket prototype to its highest altitude yet this weekend, according to road closures and a Notice to Airmen issued for the aerospace company’s launch site in southern Texas.
The spacecraft should fly 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) into the air. Previous prototypes have only made short hops of about 150 meters (492 feet).
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said there was a lot that could go wrong, and gave the rocket a one-in-three chance of landing in one piece.

Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss told CNBC on Monday that bitcoin will skyrocket to $500,000 within the next decade and surpass gold as a store of value.
“Our thesis is that bitcoin is gold 2.0, that it will disrupt gold, and if it does that, it has to have a market cap of 9 trillion, so we think it could price one day at $500,000 of bitcoin,” Tyler Winklevoss said.
The cofounders of Gemini explained that Bitcoin is a better store of value than gold and offers higher returns.
Bitcoin climbed to a new record high today, bringing its year-to-date gain to 177%.

Online travel stocks are among Monday’s big winners after Pfizer reported a 90%-plus efficacy rate for a COVID-19 vaccine trial following the delivery of a second dose. As of the time of this article, Expedia is up 23.4%, Booking is up 14.8%, TripAdvisor is up 17.8% Trivago is up 27.3% and Travelzoo is up 14.8%.

Big Tech share prices jumped early Wednesday as investors flocked to Microsoft and the FAANG family — Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix and Alphabet — while the U.S. waited for a clear presidential winner.

Facebook stock was the biggest winner of the morning, as shares jumped more than 7%. Apple traded up 4%. Amazon stock jumped more than 5%. Netflix traded nearly 4% higher, while Google parent Alphabet’s stock was up more than 6%. Microsoft also traded up more than 4%. The moves were part of a broader market jump.

Investors attributed the move in tech to factors including the group’s consistently solid returns and safety appeal in times of uncertainty. Another dynamic is the possibility that Congress could remain split, which would making sweeping legislation against Big Tech harder to pass.

WASHINGTON – The White House’s science policy office on Tuesday listed “ending the COVID-19 pandemic” among the Trump administration’s first-term accomplishments, as the United States breaks records for new coronavirus cases daily.

A press release from the Office of Science and Technology Policy lists the “decisive actions to engage scientists and health professionals in academia, industry, and government to understand, treat, and defeat the disease” as a success.

However, the disease has not been defeated, and the White House has signaled they are not going to be able to control it before a vaccine is available.
