Australian research voyage to investigate how life in the Southern Ocean captures and stores carbon from the atmosphere — ScienceDaily

A fleet of new-generation, deep-diving ocean robots will be deployed in the Southern Ocean, in a major study of how marine life acts as a handbrake on global warming.

The automated probes will be looking for ‘marine snow’, which is the name given to the shower of dead algae and carbon-rich organic particles that sinks from upper waters to the deep ocean.

Sailing from Hobart on Friday, twenty researchers aboard CSIRO’s RV Investigator hope to capture the most detailed picture yet of how marine life in the Southern Ocean captures and stores carbon from the atmosphere.

Voyage Chief Scientist, Professor Philip Boyd, from AAPP and IMAS, said it would be the first voyage of its kind to combine ship-board observations, deep-diving robots, automated ocean gliders and satellite measurements.

Endangered mouse nears ‘zero’ in southern New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Environmentalists are asking for an independent investigation into U.S. Forest Service practices in southern New Mexico, saying hundreds of grazing violations on the Lincoln National Forest have pushed an endangered mouse closer to extinction.

The Center for Biological Diversity in its request pointed to a November report that looked at the condition of the habitat used by the New Mexico meadow jumping mouse, the connectivity between those patches of habitat and how long the tiny rodent has been missing from those areas. The report indicated that the mouse’s population in one stretch of southern New Mexico was near zero.

Computer simulations explain how electrons with wide-ranging energies rain into Earth’s upper and middle atmosphere during a phenomenon known as the pulsating aurora. The findings, published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, suggest that the higher-energy electrons resulting from this process could cause destruction of the part of the ozone in the mesosphere, about 60 kilometres above Earth’s surface. The study was a collaboration between scientists in Japan, including at Nagoya University, and colleagues in the US, including from NASA.

Belmont Receives 3DIP Survey Results on A-J Lode Gold Project, Greenwood Mining Camp, Southern British Columbia.

VANCOUVER, BC / ACCESSWIRE / November 12, 2020 / Belmont Resources Ltd. (TSXV:BEA)(FRA:L3L2) is pleased to report that it has received results from SJ Geophysic’s 3DIP survey on the Athelstan-Jackpot (A-J) gold project in the prolific Greenwood mining district of southern British Columbia.

The 3DIP data is currently being reviewed by Belmont’s consulting geophysicist Sergio Espenoza, PhD. along with consulting geologist Linda Caron, M.Sc., P.Eng.

The IP results are being correlated with detailed geological mapping on the property and the recently completed drone magnetic survey and will identify and prioritize drill targets. After close to a decade of globe-spanning effort, the genome of the southern right whale has been released this week, giving us deeper insights into the histories and recovery of whale populations across the southern hemisphere.


Up to 150,000 southern right whales were killed between 1790 and 1980. This whaling drove the global population from perhaps 100,000 to as few as 500 whales in 1920. A century on, we estimate there are 12,000 southern right whales globally. It’s a remarkable conservation success story, but one facing new challenges.

The genome represents a record of the different impacts a species has faced. With statistical models we can use genomic information to reconstruct historical population trajectories and patterns of how species interacted and diverged.
