Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 888 promises faster speeds, better cameras, and more powerful AI

Qualcomm teased the Snapdragon 888, its latest 5G-equipped flagship smartphone processor, on the first day of its Snapdragon Tech Summit. But at the day two keynote, the company provided all of the details on the new chipset, which will be the brains powering almost every major 2021 Android flagship.

First off, the basic specs: the new processor will feature Qualcomm’s new Kryo 680 CPU, which will be one of the first devices to feature Arm’s latest customized Cortex-X1 core and promises up to 25 percent higher performance than last year’s chip with a maximum clock speed of 2.84GHz. And the company’s new Adreno 660 GPU promises a 35 percent jump on graphics rendering, in what it says is the biggest performance leap for its GPUs yet. 5G’s rollout speeds along faster than expected, even with the coronavirus pandemic raging

The world may be grappling with a widespread pandemic, but that’s sure not slowing down 5G’s rollout. The super-fast technology reached more customers this year than expected and will cover about 60% of the global population by 2026, according to a new report from Ericsson. That makes 5G the fastest deployed mobile network ever, the Swedish networking giant said.

SpaceX’s Starlink still provides rapid internet speeds in bad weather

  • Users of SpaceX’s Starlink satellite-internet service said how impressed they were with download speeds in snow and high-speed winds on the Reddit Starlink community.
  • One user reported speeds reaching 175 Mbps in the colder air, which is 20 Mbps faster than usual.

Developing new materials takes a lot of time, money and effort. Recently, a POSTECH research team has taken a step closer to creating new materials by applying AI to develop high-entropy alloys (HEAs) which are coined as “alloy of alloys.”

A joint research team led by Professor Seungchul Lee, Ph.D. candidate Soo Young Lee, Professor Hyungyu Jin and Ph.D. candidate Seokyeong Byeon of the Department of Mechanical Engineering along with Professor Hyoung Seop Kim of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering have together developed a technique for phase prediction of HEAs using AI. The findings from the study were published in the latest issue of Materials and Design, an international journal on materials science.

GM speeds rollout of two ‘major’ EV programs, to hire 3,000 tech jobs

DETROIT (Reuters) – General Motors Co <GM.N> has accelerated the rollout of two electric-vehicle programs since its EV Day in March and plans to hire 3,000 technology-related employees through the first quarter, an executive said on Monday.

The U.S. automaker has pulled forward “two major programs” since its March 4 event, at which it said it would invest $20 billion in electric and autonomous vehicles, Ken Morris, GM vice president of electric and autonomous programs, told reporters.

He declined to identify the programs but mentioned them after discussing the GMC Hummer EV pickup.

Vortec, a spin-off company from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore), has launched a new ceiling fan on Nov. 2, that uses half the energy of a conventional fan to cool a small room twice as quickly.

Based on original research by academics at NTU Singapore, the UFO-shaped fan is designed to harness the physical principle of a vortex, in which air is drawn up from below the fan and spins around a centre axis before being ejected from its top and dispersed around the edge of the room.

SpaceX Starlink public beta: Some users report speeds above 160 Mbps

  • SpaceX’s public beta test of its Starlink satellite-internet service is giving some users download speeds of more than 160 megabits per second — faster than 95% of US connections, according to the speed-test provider Ookla.
  • One Starlink customer in rural Montana said on Reddit that their download speed was 174 Mbps. “Starlink will forever change the game,” they said.
  • SpaceX said in an email to beta-test subscribers last week that they should expect speeds between 50 and 150 Mbps, with intermittent outages. Most speeds in a list compiled by the Starlink Reddit community fell in that range.

Apple supplier Luxshare unnerves Foxconn as U.S.-China feud speeds supply chain shift

TAIPEI/SHANGHAI (Reuters) – Apple’s AAPL.O top iPhone assembler, Taiwan-based Foxconn, has set up a task force to fend off the growing clout of Chinese electronics manufacturer Luxshare, which it believes poses a serious threat to its dominance, three sources with knowledge of the matter said.

Verizon, Ericsson and Qualcomm tout new 5G peak download speeds of 5Gbps

Verizon is continuing to improve the 5G speed of its millimeter-wave network, with the company touting today that it has reached a new peak of 5.06 gigabits per second in download speeds. In theory, a connection that fast would let you download an entire season of a TV show, in HD, in seconds. The new accomplishment, which was done together with Ericsson and Qualcomm, comes one week after Verizon boasted 4Gbps download speeds over millimeter-wave during Apple’s iPhone 12 launch. 

Unlike the 4Gbps result, which the carrier says can be found in certain cities today, the new peak download speed came in a “lab environment” using Qualcomm’s upcoming X60 5G modem. Pandemic speeds labour shift from humans to robots, WEF survey finds

ZURICH (Reuters) – Robots will destroy 85 million jobs at mid-sized to large businesses over the next five years as the COVID-19 pandemic accelerates changes in the workplace likely to exaggerate inequalities, a World Economic Forum (WEF) study has found.

Surveys of nearly 300 global companies found four out of five business executives were accelerating plans to digitise work and deploy new technologies, undoing employment gains made since the financial crisis of 2007-8.

“COVID-19 has accelerated the arrival of the future of work,” WEF Managing Director Saadia Zahidi said.

For workers set to remain in their roles in the next five years, nearly half would need to learn new skills, and by 2025, employers will divide work between humans and machines equally, the study found.
