Start Spreading The (Good) News About Cybersecurity

CEO of NTT Research, leading research in physics & informatics, cryptography & information security, and medical & health informatics.

Bad news in cybersecurity gets a lot of attention. Headlines about data breaches and new forms of malware tend to outweigh any good news that comes from the field of cryptography.

Because this field is highly mathematical and operates on a lengthy time horizon, progress can be difficult to convey. As I discussed previously, it took about 15 years for the capabilities of attribute-based encryption (ABE) to move from a technical paper into the standards world and now possible deployments.

However, academic research is a leading indicator. Recent developments include a solid theoretical foundation for software obfuscation, a new defense for public-key cryptosystems and several ways to make machine learning (ML) more trustworthy.

Obfuscation Finds Terra Firma

For 20 years, cryptographers have been working on ways to make software

Facebook will start paying UK news sites for news stories

As with the US News section, the UK tab will offer a mix of personalized and curated top stories. Facebook will normally show top headlines and stories, but will add news digests with original and “authoritative” reporting during major news cycles. The tab will build on the success of the US site, Facebook said, “where we’ve found more than 95 percent of the traffic Facebook News delivers to publishers is new audiences that have not interacted with those news outlets in the past.”

Facebook didn’t say how much it would pay publishers, but some expect millions of pounds each year from multi-year details, The Guardian reported. That means Facebook could be paying tens of millions in the UK alone, much-needed revenue for struggling news outlets. It may also feature smaller local sites that

When Did Cyber Monday Start And Who Invented It?

KEY POINTS

  • Cyber Monday refers to the Monday following Thanksgiving and Black Friday
  • The term was coined by Ellen Davis and Scott Silverman in 2005
  • Cyber Monday was created to encourage people to shop online

Just a few days after Thanksgiving and Black Friday comes another “holiday” Americans anticipate every year — Cyber Monday.

Cyber Monday is the Monday after the Thanksgiving holiday where e-commerce retailers promote their products by offering exceptional bargains. But how did the annual event start?  Retailers have Shop.org, a division of the National Retail Federation, to thank, according to CNN.

Ellen Davis, the senior vice president of research and strategic initiatives for the NRF, and retail consultant Scott Silverman, who was the executive director of Shop.org at the time, coined the term “Cyber Monday” back in 2005.

A recurring spike in online revenue and traffic on the Monday following Thanksgiving for several years in a

UK stocks up on vaccines, hopes to start virus shots in days | St. Louis business news

“There are still long weeks and months ahead before we can be completely confident that we can vaccinate enough people in the country, and thereby remove enough targets for the virus, in order to beat the disease,” he wrote.

A four-week national lockdown in England is due to end Wednesday, and will be replaced by a three-tiered system of regional measures. The vast majority of the country is being put into the upper two tiers, meaning most people will be barred from meeting up with friends indoors, pubs and restaurants still face restrictions and everything from large weddings to choir practices are being banned.

Pfizer and BioNTech say their vaccine is 95% effective, according to preliminary data. It must be stored at ultra-cold temperatures of around minus 70 degrees Celsius (minus 94 Fahrenheit). The Moderna vaccine, which also needs to be stored at freezer temperatures, was also about 95% effective

Watch Georgia Tech vs. Duke: How to live stream, TV channel, start time for Saturday’s NCAA Football game

Who’s Playing

Duke @ Georgia Tech

Current Records: Duke 2-6; Georgia Tech 2-5

What to Know

The Duke Blue Devils have had a week off and are no doubt ready to get back on the field. Duke and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will face off in an ACC battle at 7 p.m. ET Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field. Given that both teams suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this contest.

The Blue Devils were expected to have a tough go of it three weeks ago, and that’s exactly how things played out. They ended up on the wrong side of a painful 56-24 walloping at the North Carolina Tar Heels’ hands. Duke was down 49-17 at the end of the third quarter, which was just too much to recover from. A silver lining for them

France orders big tech firms to start paying digital tax

France is moving ahead with its plan to implement a controversial digital tax on big tech companies, sending out notices to various companies today informing them they’ll be required to pay up if they want to continue doing business there.

The tax is being championed by the French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire, who argues that big tech companies aren’t being taxed properly by European nations.

The problem is that big tech firms, which include Amazon.com Inc., Apple Inc., Facebook Inc., Google LLC and Microsoft Corp., take advantage of a loophole in European Union law. The loophole means they can generate lots of revenue in various European countries and report that to tax authorities in just one country, such as Ireland, which has a lower corporate tax policy. That means they end up paying far fewer in taxes than they would if they were to report in the country where
