Facebook urges Biden to restore global internet

Joe Biden should tackle the splintering of the global internet as one of his top tech priorities when he becomes president, Facebook’s head of global affairs has told Web Summit.

The Chinese internet operated on “a completely different set of values” to Silicon Valley’s “seamless and open” approach, Nick Clegg said.

He also berated the European Union for its “zealous focus” on regulation.

But he did not address the spread of misinformation on the platform.

“The global internet doesn’t exist,” Mr Clegg said in a conversation with John Micklethwait, Bloomberg’s editor-in-chief, at the Web Summit conference, which this year is online-only.

Hong Kong leader urges people to stay home as cases rise

HONG KONG (AP) — Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam on Tuesday urged residents to stay home as the city grapples with a resurgence of the coronavirus, which has infected more than 600 people in the last week.

Lam asked citizens to “refrain from social gatherings” and said that people, in particular the elderly, should remain at home.

“The latest wave of the epidemic is rather severe. Every one of us should do our best and exercise a high level of discipline to fight the pandemic,” she said at a regular news conference. “The coming two weeks is a crucial period.”

The city reported 82 new infections on Tuesday, 23 of which were unlinked to known clusters. Hong Kong has reported 6,397 infections since the pandemic began, with 109 deaths.

Many of the new infections in Hong Kong have been tied to dance studios, and outbreaks have also been found among

Rising social media subscribers, viewers and interactions trends continued this weekend after the outlet’s content was again amplified by President Donald Trump, who has turned on Fox News in recent weeks, broadly citing its coverage about his election defeat.

On Saturday, Trump tweeted that Fox was “virtually unwatchable” and pointed his vast Twitter following in the direction of Newsmax and the One America News Network (OANN), another outlet sympathetic to the president.

The Latest: Biden Urges Americans to Forgo Big Thanksgiving | Political News

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on President-elect Joe Biden (all times local):

A big Biden family Thanksgiving is off the table for President-elect Joe Biden because of the pandemic.

In remarks billed as a Thanksgiving address to the nation, the Democrat urged Americans to “hang on” and not “surrender to the fatigue” after months of coping with the virus.

He noted that public health officials have asked Americans to give up many of the traditions that make Thanksgiving special, like big indoor family get-togethers.

Biden said he knows how hard it is to give up family traditions but that it’s very important this year given the spike in virus cases, averaging about 160,000 a day.

He urged everyone to wear masks, practice social distancing and limit the size of groups, calling it a “patriotic duty” until a vaccine is approved.

Huawei founder urges Honor subbrand to become competitor after split

SHENZHEN, China (Reuters) – Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei called on employees of its departing Honor subbrand to strive to surpass its parent in a farewell speech as the tech giant sells the budget brand to keep its sanction-hobbled supply chains alive.

Huawei Technologies said earlier this month it would sell Honor to a new entity called Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology, formed of its agents and dealers, so it could resume sourcing components currently restricted by U.S. sanctions.

The U.S. government says Huawei is a national security threat, a claim the company denies.

“Wave after wave of severe U.S. sanctions against Huawei has led us to finally understand, certain American politicians want to kill us, not just

UK urges tech companies to help tackle excessive e-waste in damning report

Much of that waste is incinerated or goes to landfill, while around 40 percent is sent to other countries, often illegally. “In the countries that receive our electronic waste, it is often dumped, with toxic chemicals leaching into the environment and harming people,” the EAC wrote.

The report notes online marketplaces like Amazon and eBay aren’t always considered retailers or producers. Many products are sold by third-party retailers — around 50 percent of goods in Amazon’s case. As such, those platforms aren’t obligated to contribute to the collection and recycling of e-waste. The committee urged them to “collect products and pay for their recycling to create a level playing field with physical retailers and producers that are not selling on their platforms.”

The EAC slammed the notion of intentionally shortened device lifespans, too. While that practice might encourage consumers to buy newer products, it has a negative impact on sustainability.

Lorde said Donald Trump, California wildfires and the advocacy of Greta Thunberg spurred her to “head south” in a bid to visit the frozen continent before it turned “to slush”.

In addition to the magazine essay, Lorde will be releasing a book called Going South – her first – about the journey, with the proceeds directed towards funding a PhD student to study climate change in Antarctica.

She said: “The heated global discourse around climate change was coming to a furious, bubbling head. The Trump administration had the previous year announced its intention to withdraw from the Paris agreement. In August, Swedish 15-year-old Greta Thunberg painted her simple sign and, taking a seat outside her nation’s parliament, mobilised a generation of passionate

The incoming Democratic president also criticized President Trump for his refusal to concede his election loss and begin handing over power. Biden called Trump’s unprecedented actions “embarrassing for the country” and irresponsible.

The delay in cooperation is setting back plans for a coordinated rollout of a coronavirus vaccine, Biden said. Most of that rollout would fall to the Biden administration next year, but the Trump White House is not sharing details of its distribution plan.

Trump falsely claims that he won the Nov. 3 election and is holding up the normal transition process for a new president.
